A bag of Yellow Gesha from Finca Nueva Alianza, Cusco, Peru

What Does a Cup of Gesha Really Cost? From Auction Records to Your Kitchen

The short answer: a cup of our Yellow Gesha brewed at home costs about 2.65 euros, 3 US dollars or 28 NOK. The record-breaking auction Geishas you read about cost hundreds of dollars per cup, and that is for the green coffee alone, before anyone has roasted it.

Both numbers are true. Here is how a coffee can cost nine cents a cup or four hundred dollars a cup, and where a bag of Gesha at home fits in.

The Price Ladder, One Cup at a Time

To compare like with like, we have converted each price to one 14 g dose, the amount we use for a 250 g cup on a V60. These are prices for green, unroasted coffee, converted at the exchange rates used in our shop (1 US dollar is about 0.89 euros or 9.45 NOK).

Coffee Green coffee price Per 14 g dose (USD / EUR / NOK)
Commodity arabica, New York futures, September 2026 About US$2.87 per lb About US$0.09 / €0.08 / 0.85 NOK
Cup of Excellence Peru 2025, 5th place: Finca Nueva Alianza's yellow Geisha, 89.86 points US$32.70 per lb About US$1.01 / €0.90 / 9.50 NOK
Cup of Excellence Peru 2025, winning lot, 90.64 points US$80.10 per lb About US$2.47 / €2.20 / 23 NOK
Best of Panama 2025 record: washed Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda US$30,204 per kg About US$423 / €376 / 4,000 NOK

Green coffee also loses weight in the roaster, so the real cost per roasted dose is higher than the table shows. Sources: Trading Economics for the futures price, Alliance for Coffee Excellence for Cup of Excellence Peru 2025, and Sprudge for Best of Panama 2025.

Why Gesha Costs More Than Other Coffee

There is very little of it. At Finca Nueva Alianza, the yellow Gesha grows on a single hectare planted in 2020. What Dwight Aguilar Masias does not keep for competition is shared between a handful of roasters.

The work is slow. The cherries are picked by hand at full ripeness and rested for 24 hours before floating, which removes anything underripe or damaged. They are de-pulped, dry-fermented and then dried on raised beds under shade for around 20 days. None of that can be rushed or done by machine.

Competition sets the ceiling. Gesha is the variety most baristas choose for the World Brewers Cup, and the top lots from origin competitions are sold at auction to roasters bidding from around the world. Those prices make headlines and pull up what buyers expect to pay for the variety.

Why Our Bag Is Not 400 Dollars a Cup

Auction lots are small (the Best of Panama record lot was 20 kg), and part of what roasters pay for is the prestige of owning a winner. Our Yellow Gesha comes from the same farm and the same harvest as the lot that placed fifth in Cup of Excellence Peru 2025, but it is not the auction lot itself. That is how a coffee from a competition farm can cost about 2.65 euros a cup at home.

Is Gesha Worth the Price?

It depends on how you drink coffee.

  • Probably not if you take your coffee with milk or like a dark, heavy cup. The florals that make Gesha special get lost.
  • Yes if you drink filter coffee black and enjoy jasmine, peach and citrus in the cup. Brew it with care, let it cool a little, and you taste what the price is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a cup of Geisha coffee cost?
At home, a cup of our Yellow Gesha costs about 2.65 euros, 3 US dollars or 28 NOK, based on a 200 g bag that makes about 15 cups. Record auction Geishas cost far more: the Best of Panama 2025 record works out to about US$423 (about €376) per 14 g dose of green coffee.

Why is Geisha coffee so expensive?
Small harvests, slow handwork from picking to drying, and strong demand from competitions and auctions. At Finca Nueva Alianza, the yellow Gesha grows on a single hectare.

What is the most expensive Geisha coffee?
At Best of Panama 2025, a washed Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda sold for US$30,204 per kilo of green coffee.

How many cups are in a 200 g bag of coffee?
About 15 cups of filter coffee, depending on your recipe.

Is Gesha coffee worth it?
